While scientific research drives many aspects of human progress, it is the field of science policy that shapes the manner in which scientific discoveries are integrated into the public sphere and the method by which public opinion and government affect research function. Despite its integral role in the day to day practice of scientific research, matters related to science policy rarely break through into the general research consciousness. Science Policy Initiative Northwestern (SPiN) aims to reverse this trend by exposing the Northwestern community to relevant news items and science policy experts, facilitating dialog amongst community members regarding issues of science policy, and liaising between researchers and the public to raise awareness and foster understanding.
